Summer is winding down and the Castagna kids’ bucket list still had a few items on it.
We crossed one off this past weekend.
Detroit FC game. If you’ve never been — go. Good soccer, great atmosphere, the kind of experience that reminds you how good live sport can be when a city actually shows up for it.
But the highlight for me was getting there.
This was our first time crossing the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
I took the picture from my vehicle. I couldn’t help it. There’s something about seeing it in person for the first time — this massive, beautiful piece of infrastructure connecting our community to the other side — that hits differently than any photo or rendering ever could.
When you think about everything that had to come together to make that bridge a reality — the politics, the engineering, the funding, the agreements between two countries, the decades of conversations before a single piece of steel went up — it’s genuinely remarkable that it exists at all.
Did it take longer than it should have? Absolutely.
Was it ever going to be on time and on budget? It’s a public infrastructure project. Of course not.
But it’s there. And it’s beautiful. And our community is better for it.
Some things just take as long as they take.
My gut told me the August 19th tariff deadline would come and go without resolution.
Less than two hours before midnight, Trump paused the tariffs for three days.
Surprise, surprise.
As of today, the clock is still running. That window expires end of day tomorrow, August 21st. If you’re expecting Friday’s deadline to bring clarity — I’d manage those expectations.
My honest read is that even if an announcement comes, it will take time to understand what the deal actually means. One side will call it a win. The other side will call it a loss. The proof will be in the pudding — and that pudding takes time to set.
In the meantime, the uncertainty continues to do its work.
The uncertainty itself has been more damaging to the Canadian economy than any specific tariff would have been. Businesses pausing. Lenders tightening. Investment being deferred. All of it happening before a single tariff officially landed.
But here’s what I’m actually watching on the ground — and this is the more interesting story.
The people who know when to move are starting to move.
I’m seeing cautious optimism amongst business owners who have a good instinct for when to invest and when to tighten the purse strings. They’re not waiting for a trade announcement to tell them what to do. They’re reading the environment, making their own assessment, and acting on it.
For business owners and entrepreneurs in Windsor-Essex, that may mean moving forward with the right investment, acquisition, expansion or commercial property project — even when the broader headlines remain uncertain.
I’m also seeing lenders begin to shift — slowly, carefully — back toward looking for new business. Not any business. The right business. The well-structured deal with the right borrower in the right position.
That’s actually a healthy sign. Not a boom. Not a green light. Just the slow, deliberate return of appetite from people who know what they’re doing.

Not with a press conference that answers every question. But with a gradual return of confidence — among the people paying close enough attention to notice it before it becomes obvious to everyone else.
